E-scooters and staying safe

10 August 2026 - News
E-scooters are becoming more common and can be a convenient way to get around. We want to make sure our buildings continue to feel safe for everyone who lives in them so we’re sharing a few simple tips.
E-scooter charging

Storing and charging e-scooters

E-scooters use lithium batteries, which can present a fire risk if they are damaged, overcharged or stored in the wrong place. In shared buildings, this can affect more than one household.

To help manage this safely:

  • Avoid storing or charging e-scooters in communal areas such as corridors, stairwells or entrances

  • Keep all escape routes clear, so everyone can leave the building quickly if needed

  • Where possible, charge scooters safely inside your home, in a well-ventilated area

  • Always use the correct charger and avoid leaving devices charging unattended for long periods.

Keeping shared spaces safe

Communal areas are there for everyone and need to remain clear and accessible at all times.

Leaving items such as e-scooters in these spaces can:

  • Block escape routes in an emergency

  • Increase the risk of trips and falls

  • Make it harder for emergency services to access the building.

We’re here to help

We know e-scooters are a convenient part of everyday life. If you’re unsure about storage or charging, or what’s suitable in your building, please contact your Property & Safety Manager or Neighbourhood Officer and they’ll be happy to help.
