Fire safety during hot weather

We want everyone to be able to enjoy the summer safely, so here are a few simple reminders and ways we can support you. 

Using balconies and outdoor spaces 
Balconies can be a great place to relax, but they should be kept clear so they remain safe in the unlikely event of a fire.  

Items such as furniture, boxes or other stored belongings can increase risk, particularly in hotter, drier weather. 

If you’re unsure what is suitable to keep on your balcony, speak to us for help. 

Barbecues and open flames 
We know barbecues are part of summer, but they can pose a fire risk, especially near buildings.  

For safety reasons, barbecues aren’t permitted on balconies. This is in line with the terms of our tenancy and lease agreements.  

If you have a garden and are planning a barbecue, here’s a few tips to help keep things safe:  

• Set your barbecue on level ground, well away from anything that could catch fire, such as sheds, fences, trees, or garden structures. 

• Use the right materials – firelighters are the safest way to get started. Flammable liquids such petrol or paraffin can be dangerous and shouldn’t be used. 

• Barbecues can stay hot for a long time and may continue to give off fumes even after they appear to be out. Please don’t bring them indoors or into enclosed spaces like tents. 

Inside your home 
Hot weather can sometimes lead to increased use of fans, extension leads, or electrical items. It’s worth keeping an eye on these: 

• Avoid overloading plug sockets 

• Turn appliances off when you’re not using them 

• Keep exits and hallways clear so you can leave quickly if needed.
